Data for Good: Creatives and Scientists Can Change the World

Now at Urban ReThink!

Social data is exploding and scientists are gaining
new insights into human behavior. How can we use this
data to create something meaningful? How can scientists,
developers, artists, and other innovators work together
to build tools or products that make the world more
productive, interesting and beautiful?

Hilary Mason (hilarymason.com) is Chief Scientist
at Bit.ly and co-founder of HackNY(and tweets too @hmason). A dataist with a
background in machine learning, data mining, and
Web applications, she is a featured presenter at
Mashable Connect 2012 and serves on Mayor

John Denver Tribute Concert at the Springs

Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra’s

ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH at THE SPRING

Starring Jim Curry

Christopher Wilkins, conductor   |  Jim Curry, guitar & vocals

Excitement is growing as the Orlando Philharmonic prepares to pay tribute to America’s beloved musical icon, John Denver in a Rocky Mountain High at The Springs.

The music of the late John Denver is like an old friend, outlasting trends and standing the test of time.  Denver’s uplifting music and lyrics continue their appeal to all ages.

Join the Orlando Philharmonic and acclaimed performer Jim Curry  for this tribute to the music of one of the most beloved singer/songwriters ever to grace the stage.

“The physical resemblance is amazing, the voice is unbelievable. If John Denver were alive today,
he’d want to hear songs performed by Jim Curry.” — Christina Chanes Nystrom, City News

Tribute artist Jim Curry, whose voice was heard in the CBS-TV movie Take Me Home: The John Denver Story, has performed Denver’s music in sold out shows throughout the country and has emerged as today’s top performer of Denver’s vast legacy of multi-platinum hits.

Even at this early stage in his life Jim’s natural voice resembled that of singer/songwriter John Denver.  Embracing this similarity, he continued to sing and specialize in the songs of John Denver, sharing John’s positive messages of love, humanity, and environmental awareness.

The untimely death of John Denver in 1997 was a tragedy that was felt the world over.  Such a void in the musical world left John’s ardent fans demanding that his music survive.  CBS television responded by producing a made for TV movie: “Take Me Home, the John Denver Story” in which Jim landed an off-camera role singing as the voice of John Denver.  This experience inspired Jim to produce full–length John Denver tribute concerts.

Pack a picnic, grab your blanket and join us at The Springs 2012 as you fill up your senses with the music and the memories of John Denver in a Rocky Mountain High celebration at The Springs 2012.

Mickey Avalon at The Social

Mickey Avalon with Andre Legacy at The Social

Hollywood rapper Mickey Avalon is coming through town on May 1st in Orlando for a performance at the The Social. We would love to work out a time for you to set up a quick interview with Mickey or a preview to advance the show.

Mickey’s rock n’ roll story is definately one for the books. His grandparents were holocaust survivors imprisoned in Auschwitz concentration camps, while his father was a alcoholic, heroin addict that was killed by a drunk driver, and his mother sold weed to get by. Mickey followed in his father’s footsteps and developed a raging smack habit, which he had to resort to prostitution on the streets of Portland to fund his next fix. All this after he just got married in his early 20s and had a child.

Afterwards Mickey decided to clean himself up and move back to Hollywood, where he discovered his sister dead of a drug overdose. He then got clean and focused on music where he met MTV VJ Simon Rex (now known as Dirt Nasty) who shopped his demo around the LA club scene, which led to Mickey being discovered by Interscope who signed him. Mickey’s story is truly one of the most insane rock stories of recent memory.

*Proceeds will benefit esophageal cancer programs at Florida Hospital.

Central Floridians will hopefully no longer remain in the dark about the signs and symptoms of esophageal cancer, thanks to passionate community leader Pamela Sain.

“We want the community to pay close attention to the signs and symptoms of acid reflux and heart burn.  The problem is patients are self medicating with over the counter antacids and are masking their symptoms,” said Sain. “Patients need to share their symptoms with their physicians so they can be properly screened and be able to take control of their health. With proper medication and screening, patients can hopefully have more positive outcomes.”

Sain sustained the eight and a half month journey helping her father battle esophageal cancer, a disease that is growing by 463 percent per year, the fastest growing cancer according to the American Cancer Society.
